The Battle of the River Plate – the first major naval engagement of WWII took place close to Montevideo.  This involved both the British and New Zealand navy.

And Montevideo also has an Obelisk – like so many other cities in the world.  What is it with cities and obelisks/towers?

According to Wikipedia Montevideo has almost 50 sister cities/twin towns!  More than I've seen any other place to date!
