Capital City of the Week – Washington DC

This is the last of the Capital City series so I am finishing with one everyone knows!  Washington DC.  DC was a planned city. A French born architect L'Enfant (which means Child) was engaged to plan it.

This is the Smithsonian Institution.  Doesn't it look grand!

Stockholm is built on 14 islands.

This picture of Stockholm was taken around midnight on a summer night.  The nights are very short then.

This week's capital is one I have never been to – Bucharest.  But from the pictures it does look pretty.  The first picture is of Covaci Street.

They have a tower in Ankara – we do in Auckland as well – but why?    What, exactly, is the point?

Skopje (which I think is pronounced  'scope + yay') is a medium sized city. 

 

This bridge – The Stone Bridge – is one of the symbols of Skopje.

Another super well known capital this week!    Rome has the River Tiber running through it. 

 

Rome is unusual in that the city contains another city within it.  And that city is defended by the Swiss Guard.

Rome has 8 Egyptian obelisks. 

Rome has only one twin city – but it's a goodie – Paris!

Berlin is situated on the River Spree – great name for a river!
