Location – On the border with Scotland – top right. And borders the North Sea.

 

Origin of name – it comes from meaning the land north of the river Humber.

Location – inland in what is known as the East Midlands.

 

Nicknames – the Rose of the Shires

Famous places to visit – Althorp House (Spencer family), Burghley House (& horse trials), Rockingham Castle, Grand Union Canal, Welland Viaduct, Oundle (Market town), Salcey Forest, Coton Manor (bluebell wood), site of Fotheringhay Castle (execution site of Mary, Queen of Scots), Silverstone track

 

Famous businesses/brands – historically known for the manufacture of boots and shoes.  Still has the UK base for the manufacture of Doc Martens.  Kinky Boots was set in the county.

 

Famous people from Northamptonshire – Mark Haddon (Curious Incident of the Dog in the  Night-time) – there will be others but I couldn't find them

Historical titbits – Boadicea of the Iceni was in what is now Norfolk

 

Nicknames – the people are sometimes called Norfolk Dumplings
