Counties of the UK: Northamptonshire


 

This is the next instalment of my monthly feature going through the Counties of the UK in alphabetical order to check out things of interest.  I hope you enjoy it

 


Location – inland in what is known as the East Midlands.

 

Nicknames – the Rose of the Shires

County seat – Northampton

 

 


Flower – Cowslip

 


Signature foods – Clangers, Cattern cakes, Weetabix,

 


Famous places to visit – Althorp House (Spencer family), Burghley House (& horse trials), Rockingham Castle, Grand Union Canal, Welland Viaduct, Oundle (Market town), Salcey Forest, Coton Manor (bluebell wood), site of Fotheringhay Castle (execution site of Mary, Queen of Scots), Silverstone track

 

Famous businesses/brands – historically known for the manufacture of boots and shoes.  Still has the UK base for the manufacture of Doc Martens.  Kinky Boots was set in the county.

 

Famous people from Northamptonshire – Mark Haddon (Curious Incident of the Dog in the  Night-time) – there will be others but I couldn't find them

  1. Northamptonshire is a fascinating county. One of your pictures shows the National Lift Tower, an amazing structure used for the testing of lift mechanisms to ensure they are safe. There only one other such tower in Europe. https://www.nationallifttower.net/. Charles Dickens often visited the county, and one grand House owned by his friends Rushden Hall, was used as the inspiration for Satis House - the residence of crazy Miss Havisham. We were once treated by a rich friend to a meal in the glorious wood panelled dining room! My more usual Northamptonshire fare is a bowl I'd breakfast weetabix.
