Bernadette of Lourdes was born in 1844 and died in 1879. She was a country girl – the eldest of six children.
When she was 14 she had a vision of a beautiful young woman. This vision recurred 18 times. Each time only she was present.
She stuck to her story even though she was bullied. In 1866 she became a nun which at least protected her from the public.
The site of her visions became a major pilgrimage site – many people go there to be healed.
