Counties of the UK: Cambridgeshire



This is the next instalment of a new monthly feature going through the Counties of the UK in alphabetical order to check out things of interest.  I hope you enjoy it

As an aside 3 signatories of the US Declaration of Independence studied at Cambridge – Thomas Lynch, Arthur Middleton and Thomas Nelson.


Location – about 50 miles north of London

Nicknames – Cambs

County seat – Cambridge, funnily enough! It is one of the few cities in the UK without a cathedral.  Largest city is Peterborough.


Unusual village names – Bassingbourn-cum-Kneesworth, Swaffham Prior & Reach

Signature foods – Cambridge Burnt Cream, Cambridge sausage


Famous places to visit – Cambridge University, The Barrows at Bartlow Hills (Largest surviving Roman burial mounds in Western Europe), Cam River (punting) . Peterborough Cathedral is the site of Catherine of Aragon's grave.  Oliver Cromwell's head is buried in Cambridge at a secret location within the University.  This occurred many decades after his execution – it was in 1960.



Famous people from Cambridgeshire – John Maynard Keynes, Douglas Adams (Hitchhiker's Guide), Olivia Newton-John,   In addition many actors started their career with the Footlights Amateur Dramatics Club of the University including – Emma Thompson, Hugh Laurie and Stephen Fry.
