The band that came up with Selling England by the Pound was not obscure or particularly
odd. It was Genesis – you know, of Phil
Collins fame. It harks from 1973 and was
the band's 5th studio album.
Apparently the band wanted to indicate their
Englishness by the title??? Or is it an
allusion to the take over of English music by Americans? We don't know because
it is not also the title of a track on the album.
