This is the next instalment of my monthly feature going through the Counties of the UK to check out things of interest.  I hope you enjoy it

 


Location – in the midlands with no coast

 

County symbol – the fox

 

Pronounciation – Less + stir + sheer

 


Historical titbit – The skeleton of Richard III was found in 2012 under a carpark in Leicester.  He was re-buried in the Cathedral.

 

Flag – the  only county not to have adopted a flag (not counting Greater London)

 


County seat – Leicester (which is part of the ceremonial county)

 

 


Flower – Foxglove

 


Signature foods – Stilton and Red Leicester cheeses, pork pie

 


Famous places to visit – Belvoir Castle, Leicester Cathedral, Foxton Locks

 

Famous businesses/brands – historic bell foundries, Triumph motorcycles (Hinckley)

 


Famous people from the county – Lady Jane Grey, George Fox (Quakers), Julian Barnes (author), Sue Townsend (Adrian Mole), Gary Lineker (soccer), Simon de Montfort, Graham Chapman (Monty Python)
