The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time by Mark Haddon

The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time deserves its place on the UK BookTrust's list of books for 12-14 year olds.  I thought it was suitable for adults as well.

I would never have read this based on the title – but I'm so glad I did.  It is an incredibly well written story about events in the life of a teenager who is on the spectrum.  It is told from his perspective – and I must say it helps you understand how these people are wired differently.

Christopher has a severe condition and attends a special school.  But he is very bright and very good at maths.  But new things overwhelm him.  And his family struggles to deal with him.

Ultimately it is an uplifting tale in a sad setting.  Just read it.

  2. We read this in our book club years ago and had a great discussion about it (see here).
I totally agree that it is not just for young people, we all can learn so much from it. Great book.
