A New Zealand book every kid should read before the age of 12 - The Bantam and the Soldier by Jennifer Beck & Robyn Belton

The New Zealand Book Council came up with a list of books by New Zealanders that they reckon every kid should have read by the age of 12.  I decided to check out the ones I haven't read and post about the ones I agreed were good (in no particular order).

The Bantam and The Soldier is a cute little picture book designed to be read to/by 6 to 9 year olds (not for real littlies).

It is set in the First World War in France.  A young country boy from New Zealand encounters a little bantam hen that is bullied by the rest of the flock.

It is gentle, despite the war setting.  The bantam becomes a bit of a mascot in the trenches and rewards the soldiers by laying eggs.

  1. Another good one! Last night I read Snowflake Bentley, a biographical picture book about a 19th century man who figured out how to photograph snowflakes. It won the Caldecott Award in 1999.
