Counties of the UK: Cheshire




This is the next instalment of a new monthly feature going through the Counties of the UK in alphabetical order to check out things of interest.  I hope you enjoy it

Cheshire is a mostly rural county with about a million people living there.


Location – Cheshire is bordered on the left by the top bit of Wales. It is in the north west of England. It also has borders with a lot of other counties.

Pronounciation – Chesh + eer

County seat – Chester, but the largest town is Warrington


Unusual village names – Broadbottom, Over Peover



Flower – Cuckooflower


Signature foods – Cheshire cheese, of course.  Said to be the oldest English cheese. Came wrapped in cloths which had a grinning cat on it.  This lead to Lewis Carroll's grinning like a Cheshire cat.  Cheshire Pork Pie.


Famous places to visit – Little Moreton Hall, Chester Cathedral, Tabley House, Lyme Park
