So what do the French call French Toast – pain perdu –
lost bread to you and me.
French toast – the dish – goes way back at least to
Roman times – it wasn't called French Toast then. I couldn't find any convincing rationale for
the Gallic reference.
The English having bestowed the name on French Toast
now refer to it as eggy bread!
A traditional simple French Toast recipe:
Ingredients:
- 2 eggs
- 1/2 cup (125 mL) milk (1%)
- 4 slices whole wheat or white bread
Method:
Whisk eggs and milk in
shallow bowl.
Spray large skillet with
cooking spray (I would use melted butter with a little oil). Heat skillet over
medium heat.
Dip one slice of bread at
a time into egg mixture and let soak for 10 seconds on each side. Remove from
egg mixture, letting excess drip off. Place on hot skillet and cook until
bottom is golden brown, 1-1/2 to 2 minutes. Turn over to cook other side until
browned.
Serve with maple syrup,
fruit syrup, jam, honey or fresh seasonal fruit.
