Counties of the UK: Buckinghamshire




This is the next instalment of a monthly feature going through the Counties of the UK in alphabetical order to check out things of interest.  I hope you enjoy it


Location – Borders London to the South East – Buckingham shire is one of the Home Counties

Pronounciation – as its spelled except shire is said 'sheer'

Nicknames – Bucks (abbreviation)


Flag – note the chained swans indicating that they were reserved for the Crown


County seat – Buckingham (and before that Aylesbury) (largest city is Milton Keynes)


Unusual town name – Marsh Gibbon


Flower – Chiltern gentian


Signature foods –Cherry Turnovers, Stokenchurch Pie, Bacon dumpling,

Bletchley Park

Famous places to visit – Chiltern Hills, Chequers (PM's country retreat), Grand Union Canal, Cliveden, Bletchley Park, Waddesdon Manor

Famous people from Buckinghamshire – Prince Michael of Kent, Tim Rice, Benjamin Disraeli, Terry Pratchett (couldn't find any famous women?)
