Paintings of Children by their Artist Parents

George Dunlop Leslie –Alice in Wonderland

Today's art post is not about any one artist.  I decided to show you some paintings that various artists had done of their own children.
Leslie was a Victorian artist (as in the Victorian era rather than Victoria in Australia).  This is a painting of his wife reading to his daughter Alice.

Picasso – Paulo as a Harlequin
Picasso's son, Paulo, was 3 years old when he posed for this painting.  Paulo loved fancy dress – a trait probably inherited from his ballerina mother.

Berthe Morisot – Reading
Berthe Morisot was married to Manet's brother.  Her daughter Julie was also painted by Renoir and Manet.

Millais – My first sermon

Millais is one of the Pre-Raphaelites.  This little girl is Effie, his 3rd child out of 8.  This painting was a raging success.

Paul Gauguin – The little dreamer

This painting is of Gauguin's daughter Aline at 4 years old.  She died at the young age of 20 from pneumonia.

Arthur Rackham – A portrait of the artist's daughter, Barbara
From this painting you can see why Arthur Rackham was such a great illustrator of children's books

For more paintings of artist's children, you could get  Child – Portraits by 40 Great Artists by Juliet Heslewood out from your library.
