Bacon & Egg Pie – a Kiwi Classic

Bacon & egg pie by Carole's Chatter - a Kiwi classic

A bacon & egg pie is a Kiwi classic dish – along with Pavlova and Cheese Rolls.

As you know I'm not a baker but even I can manage a reasonable bacon & egg pie.

I used bought frozen puff pastry.  After giving the dish a bit of a grease up I put the pastry in and lined it as soon as it became pliable.

You put in half the bacon as a first layer and then put in a cup of frozen peas and crack a dozen eggs into the dish.  As you can see I left most of them whole but did swirl a fork through one or two of them.  Reserve one egg yolk out of the eggs to glaze the pastry.

Then season with salt and pepper and add the layer of bacon (rind off).

Put the pastry lid on top with a little art work if you fancy – as you can see mine was pretty basic.

Chill in the fridge for 30 minutes.  Then glaze the top with the egg yolk (having whisked it up a bit).

Bake at 180 degrees C (approx. 350 F) for 45 minutes.

  1. That's lovely. I really like how the egg yolk glaze gave such a beautiful color to the top of the crust. I don't recall this dish from my trip to NZ in the mid 1980s, but I had Pavlova!

  7. Very different! I might have to try this. Your bacon looks like ham slices over here in the States though. Any thoughts on that?
