Flag of the Week – Portugal

This Portuguese flag dates from 1910 when Portugal became a republic. Red and green were the republican colours. The centre has reminders of Portugal's past like the white shield containing 5 blue shields which represent King Alfonso Henrique's victory over five Moorish princes in 1139. All in all, an attractive flag.

  3. Thanx for the information. Why is it that flags always have bright colors and not pastels? Are there any flags in the world that do have pastel colors? Sorry to go on but you got me thinking! 1. Your comment about the flags got me intrigued. I flicked right through my little flag book and, what do you know, I didn't find even one! Flags must have been designed by men! Or rather, I suspect they are designed to be visible over distances so that might explain it. Cheers
