This Portuguese flag dates from 1910 when Portugal became a republic. Red and green were the republican colours. The centre has reminders of Portugal's past like the white shield containing 5 blue shields which represent King Alfonso Henrique's victory over five Moorish princes in 1139. All in all, an attractive flag.

Your comment about the flags got me intrigued. I flicked right through my little flag book and, what do you know, I didn't find even one! Flags must have been designed by men! Or rather, I suspect they are designed to be visible over distances so that might explain it. Cheers
