Solution – Dryden

Another word for "flat" can be "dry" – in the sense of something being dull.

Another word for "retreat" is "den" – as in a study

Put them together and you get "Dryden" which is the name of an English poet from the 17^th Century.  I looked him up and found that I didn't recognise a single one of his poems!
