Jean Batten

Jean Batten was born on 15 September 1909.  She was New Zealand's most famous aviatrix.  In 1936 she made the first ever solo flight from England to New Zealand.

In later life she became a recluse.  In 1982 she suffered a dog bite on the island of Majorca and died from complications, having refused treatment.

  1. Some of the woman from that period were very courageous. It is interesting to learn about them and their exploits. Have a wonderful day. Blessings...Mary

  2. How sad is that? When I was a little girl around 11 I wanted to be the first ever woman commercial pilot here in the U.S. On a Sunday, I remember this clearly there was a section of the Sunday paper that was an insert and I spotted the feature was someone much older than me had achieved that.
I never even came close to becoming a pilot - my Dad got his license.
Have a stunning week and keep posting these wonderful things. Love your blog.
