Tuvalu was originally part of the Gilbert & Ellice Islands and as such was a British colony until 1975. Tuvalu became independent in 1978 and this flag was adopted in 1995. The flag shows Tuvalu's coat of arms and one star for each of the 8 inhabited islands. Only about 10 thousand people live there.
