Dusty Springfield: Gone but never forgotten

Dusty Springfield

Dusty Springfield was born Mary O’Brien in West Hampstead, London. She was part of a folk group “The Springfields” with her brother and adopted that surname when she went solo.

By 1966 he was the best selling female pop vocalist in the world.  She could be described accurately as a cultural icon of the Swinging Sixties.  Her best album is “Dusty in Memphis”, 1969  which was recorded in Memphis.  Her voice is incredibly distinctive.

My favourite Dusty tracks include: Willie and Laura Mae Jones and of course "Son of a Preacher Man".

In her later years she did a duet with the Pet Shop Boys.  She died in 1999 of breast cancer.  A real loss to music.
