Acrostic Clues - Solution for 15 August cryptic crossword clue

Those fronting extremely vicious acts don’t easily escape (5)

Solution – evade

This is an example of an acrostic clue.

Acrostic clues, like hidden word clues, can be some of the easiest to solve but are relatively rare.  The answer is right there in the clue.  Usually as the first letters of a group of words which spell out the word that is defined in the clue as the solution.  But they can use last or middle letters.

So there will be a definition for the solution, an indicator that the clue involves an acrostic and the words from which the acrostic is taken.

Indicators of an acrostic are:  Initially, beginners, begins, first, firstly, heads, leaders, starters.

In this example, the indicator is “those fronting”.  When you add together the first letters of the following 5 words you get “evade” which means “escape”.
