Glastonbury Abbey

I have been to a number of ruined abbeys but one of the most memorable was Glastonbury Abbey in Somerset.  It is in a lovely setting and on a nice day represents some of the best of English excursions.

The abbey was started off in the 7th century.  It was destroyed by fire in the 12th century, rebuilt.  It became famous again – not the least since it was supposed to be the burial place of the legendary King Arthur.

The Abbey was stripped by Henry the 8th and then fell into ruins.  The Church bought it back in 1908.
