Len Lye died on this day in 1980. Although he died years ago, his kinetic
sculptures are still being created. He
left behind very detailed instructions for new sculptures which others are now
bringing to fruition.
One
of his most prominent sculptures can be found in New Plymouth – a provincial
town in New Zealand. The Wind Wand. It is 45 metres high – that’s high!
He
was also a pioneering film maker.
The
biggest collection of his work is found in New Plymouth. Although most of his work was done from an
American base (and he became an American citizen in 1950) it was sent back, at
the artist’s request, to the land of his birth after he died.
Kinetic
sculpture really is “art that moves” – in more ways than one.
