Lola by the Kinks was a runaway success in 1970 but very controversial in its time – being the first pop song about transexuality. It got a lot of airplay despite this, although the BBC did insist on changing the lyric “Coca Cola” to “Cherry Cola”. The song only got to #2 in the UK but topped the charts in NZ.
Other Kinks hits include “Dedicated Follower of Fashion” and “You Really Got Me”. They were a British invasion band that stayed very British rather than morphing into an American sound like many similar groups did.
