For those of us not from the US, I thought I'd look
into the origins of Memorial Day. It is always on the last Monday of May and is
a public holiday.
It used to be known as Decoration Day – which I must
say is a bit ambiguous. It originated to
honour Union soldiers who died during the Civil War. Believe it or not there is also a Confederate
Memorial Day.
The day is meant to mark the sacrifice of those who
have died in US military service
The Memorial Day weekend is also taken to be the start
of the summer season.
