Counties of the UK: City of London

This is the next instalment of a monthly feature going through the Counties of the UK in alphabetical order to check out things of interest.  I hope you enjoy it

The City of London is an unusual county.  It comprises only the central historical bit of London and is tiny compared to the whole metropolis of London.  The City is about a square mile in area.  Less than 10000 people live there but about 300,000 come to the City every day to work.

The Great Fire of London in 1666 destroyed about 80% of the City.

Location – An important little sliver in the middle of London by the side of the River Thames.

Nicknames – The City

Coat of Arms

Unusual street names – Hanging Sword Alley, Crutched Friars, Magpie Alley

Signature foods – Fish & chips, Pie and Mash, Bangers and Mash

Famous places to visit – Bank of England on Threadneedle St, Lloyd's insurance center, St Paul's Cathedral, the Gherkin, Leadenhall Market, the Old Bailey, Finsbury Circus (a circular park), Tower of London (not in the City but adjacent to it)

Famous businesses/brands –  The City sees itself as the financial capital of the world – New Yorkers might have something to say about that!
