Whistlejacket by George Stubbs

Today I have a more famous painting for you.  This prancing horse is Whistlejacket by George Stubbs – perhaps the most famous painter of horses of all time.  This painting dates from around 1762.  The painting is almost life size.  The horse is a race horse and was apparently named after a contemporary cold remedy containing gin and treacle!

This horse is simply magnificent and I think the blank background just emphasises that.  If you want to see the original you'll have to head over to the National Gallery in London.

George Stubbs - gone but not forgotten

This post is to remember the famous English painter of horses, George Stubbs, who died on 10 July 1806.  He did paint some other subjects, but in the horse mad country of England, it is his ones of horses that made him famous.
