1931 Hawke’s Bay earthquake

On 3 February we remember the victims of the 1931 Hawkes Bay earthquake as well as victims of all earthquakes everywhere.

The 1929 Murchison Earthquake

The Murchison earthquake struck the South Island of New Zealand on this day in 1929. It was a big one – magnitude 7.8. That is a lot stronger than the February Christchurch quake.

It was felt across much of the country. Only 17 people died as a result of the centre of the quake being rural. It created 38 new lakes.

1st Anniversary of Christchurch Earthquake

Today is the first anniversary of the devastating earthquake in Christchurch.  My thoughts go out to all those who suffered and who are still struggling to rebuild their lives.

On a less serious note, we must thank Mayor Bob Parker for bringing “munted” firmly into the New Zealand lexicon.

Earthquakes

On 23 January 1855 New Zealand was struck by a 8.1 magnitude earthquake in the Wairarapa - the largest in recorded history in NZ.
