Do you play cliché bingo?

Don’t you just hate some of the clichés that we encounter all the time in the business world?  If you listen out at meetings you can play a sort of personal bingo by ticking off each one of these you hear:

We need to all be on the same page
We need to sing from the same song sheet
Let’s get this show on the road
Better safe than sorry
Thinking outside the box
Win-win situation
At the end of the day…
Paradigm shift
Low-hanging fruit
Push the envelope
Drop the ball
Let’s take this offline
Lets hit the ground running
24/7
Touch base
Manage expectations
Put a stake into the ground
Mission critical
It’s a no brainer
Herding cats
Quite frankly
Blue sky thinking
Quick wins
If it ain’t broke don’t fix it
Don’t reinvent the wheel
The ball is in your court
The devil’s in the details
I think we can agree to disagree
Comparing apples with apples
Lets not put the cart before the horse
Lets not beat a dead horse
In a nutshell
Run this one up the flagpole
Drill down
It’s not rocket science
Get your ducks in a row
Ballpark figure
By the close of play
Giving you a heads up
Suck it and see

And no doubt many more could be added – both in the business world and other spheres.  Suggestions most welcome.

From Good to Great

If you only ever read one business/management book, make it this one.  Yes it was written a few years ago - 2001.  But it is the basic ideas in it that are key.

From analysing companies that were good performers and then got even better, the author Jim Collins derived 7 common characteristics:
·                    Level 5 Leadership: Leaders who are humble, but driven to do what's best for the company.
·                    First Who, Then What: Get the right people on the bus, then figure out where to go. Finding the right people and trying them out in different positions.
·                    Confront the Brutal Facts: The Stockdale paradox - Confront the brutal truth of the situation, yet at the same time, never give up hope.
·                    Hedgehog Concept: Three overlapping circles: What makes you money? What could you be best in the world at? and What lights your fire?
·                    Culture of Discipline: Rinsing the cottage cheese.
·                    Technology Accelerators: Using technology to accelerate growth, within the three circles of the hedgehog concept.
·                    The Flywheel: The additive effect of many small initiatives; they act on each other like compound interest.
Does it sound simple?  You bet.  But I am a believer.
