The Eleventh Hour by Graeme Base

There's something for almost everyone in this fabulous, theoretically, kids' book.  The story is intricately illustrated – lots to look at carefully.  And if you are into solving puzzles there are lots of clues – of different types.

Horace the Elephant is turning 11 and so he invites 10 of his best friends (all different creatures) to a party.

But all the food gets eaten up  - but no one owns up to it.

There is even a section of the book at the back which provides some of the answers – and even after I'd looked at that I still didn't get all the clues.  One little clue I will give you – the time line is important.

Published in 1989 this book has certainly stood the test of time.
