My apologies to whoever recommended The Deadening to me – I try to keep a note but didn't this time. Someone must have recommended because it is outside my normal genres.
This is described as a suspense – but the story is unusual. The protagonist Olivia wakes up in hospital after being in a coma. No one knows what happened to her. Gradually her memories come back to her and the story is pieced together.
The title sounds pretty gruesome but it actually derives from Olivia's previous life.
It certainly captured my attention and held it to the end.
