Haymaking by Jules Bastien-LePage (1877)

If you want to see the original of this lovely painting, you'll have to go to the Mus̩e D'Orsay in Paris Рchance'd be a fine thing.

This painting doesn't idealise country life but shows the untidy realities.

The reaper is lying stretched out and the girl tedder is just staring – no doubt exhausted by the work and the heat.

The painter is one of those accomplished French painters that the ordinary person has never heard of.  He died in Paris at the age of 36.
