Juan Gris was Spanish, born in Madrid in 1887. His birth name was José Victoriano González-Pérez. Quite a mouthful.
He studied engineering before studying art. His mathematical bent comes out in his paintings. He was a Cubist.
He died of kidney failure at the age of 40.
