The Virgin of the Host by Ingres

This painting dates back to 1854.  Ingres was a devout French Catholic and offers us this view in this painting. He is a neo-classicist.

Ingres first name is Jean-Auguste-Dominique!  What a mouthful.  What were his parents thinking? Ingres was born in 1780 and died in 1867 aged 86.

It is quite outstanding that this painting is not outshone by that frame – talk about fancy!

  1. What a beautiful painting, the skin tones have the touch of genius. I wonder who commissioned this painting and where it was first displayed.
