Jesus said Peter was the rock of the church. Peter was impetuous – he was so enraged by Judas' treachery that he sliced off his ear!
He was the first apostle to perform a miracle – healing a lifelong lame leg.
He was crucified by Emperor Nero. He is patron of fishermen and the papacy. His emblems are keys, ship, fish and a cockerel. His feast day is the 29th June.
