John The Baptist

John The Baptist died about 30 AD.  He chose a life of hardship and poverty and spent his life warning people about the coming of The Messiah.

He attracted a large following.  He baptized Jesus.  He was murdered by Herod at the request of Salome.

His emblems are a lamb, a cross and a scroll.  He is patron of Pilgrims, Knights Hospitallers, hoteliers and birdwatchers.  His feast day is on the 24th June.
