Faustine by Maxwell Armfield (1904)

I had never heard of this artist before.  But seeing this painting in a book on the paintings in the Musee D'Orsay made me want to know more.

The artist was an Englishman from a Hampshire Quaker family.  He was part of the Arts & Crafts movement.  This painting is said to be 'Romantic'.  He lived to 1972.

I think the female sitter looks fed up and definitely not interested in the pale languishing young man.  The bottle on the table hints of the orient.  The pattern on the dress is lovely but it seems to be very baggy.
