Balthus's name at birth was Balthazar Klossowski de Rola. He was born in Paris in 1908 and lived until 2001.
There is something both charming and disturbing about this painting, Girl and Cat, from 1937. The cat is looking unimpressed. The young girl looks somewhere between bored and grumpy. Yet the painting has power.
Apparently the artist really adored cats.
