Rangitoto

Rangitoto is an island in Auckland's Waitemata Harbour.  It is New Zealand's youngest (600 years) and largest volcano (out of 48).  It is sleeping but not extinct.

It is home to the world's largest Pohutukawa forest.

The island is in fact round and so it looks the same from whichever direction you are looking at it.

It is a short ferry ride to get there.  You can hike or catch the 4 wheel drive road train to get to the summit (260ft).  About an hour's walk.

No one lives on the island – there are still about 30 baches there (2 of them are rentable).  There are no public facilities.  The island is now pest free. You can't take your dog or any other animal there.
