Herald Island

Is an island still an island if you can drive to it??  Does it matter whether it is over a bridge or on a causeway?  Whatever, Herald Island is a little known corner of Auckland.  Just 25k from the centre of the city.  And just 2k around!

It's an island in the Upper Harbour – ie above the Auckland Harbour Bridge.

The main beach is Christmas Beach which is seasonally appropriate.

There is a community library in an old red phone box.

No shops there, so take your picnic with you.

The Maori name for the island is Pahiki which apparently means business or enterprise.  It has had other names including Wood's and Pine. The causeway was built in 1957.

There are 275 houses on the island.  A sleepy little community in a big city.
