Not content with having the steepest street in the
world, New Zealand also has the longest place name – in both cases to the
chagrin of Wales!
Our place name is 85 characters long. It is in Te Reo (Maori). It's a hill in the Hawke's Bay.
Are you ready? Taumata
whakatangi hangakoauau o tamatea turi pukakapiki maunga horo nuku pokai whenua
kitanatahu – what does it mean in English? The place where Tamatea, the man
with the big knees, who slid, climbed and swallowed mountains, known as
'landeater’, played his flute to his loved one.
The hill is on private land so you need permission to
go up it – but you can take a selfie with the sign – if your camera is wide
angled enough.
