Holes by Louis Sachar

I enjoyed Holes – a lot.  Despite the unappealing title.  It's a young adult mystery comedy novel – whatever that means.

The story is complex but still simple – many things you don't understand at the beginning make sense or are important to the plot by the end.

If you like a story about a youngster who through bad luck ends up in juvenile detention  - go for this one.

A minor warning – the book does describe violence – not gratuitously but still.  And there are creepy crawlies.  One for adults or 11 pluses.

  1. The title is off putting but the story less so. Thanks for the update.

  2. I loved Holes and the title fits the story but it's always difficult to find a subject that everyone likes. It has been translated into many languages and most seem to have just translated the original title whereas the French call the book The Passage which is not bad but I think the original title is better.

Anyway, there is a follow-up, Small Steps and a fun book for children called Stanley Yelnats’ Survival Guide to Camp Green Lake .

    I'd recommend both of them.
