Finding Chika by Mitch Albom

I don't usually sob over books – but this one choked me up.  So be warned if you are vulnerable.  Mitch Albom is a talented writer.  His classic work was Tuesdays with Morrie.

This little book tells the story of Chika a little Haitian girl.  She came to the orphanage that the author runs?/supports and she got sick with a rare form of brain cancer.

So from the get go you know how her story ends – but it is also a story about how a chlldless first world couple end up a family with Chika.

I'm sure everyone meant well, but at some points I was left wondering whether all the treatments were the best route.  Sure her life was extended by over a year but….

Let me know what you think.

  1. I knew the ending before I started the book, so perhaps that tempered my reaction, but still a sad story and not only in terms of Chika's cancer diagnosis. As for the aggressive cancer treatments, as someone who has never had to go through this nightmare, I think as a parent you would always hold out the hope that your child might be different and that any potential new treatment might be that one thing that saves your child.
