Départements de France: Hautes-Alpes




This is the next instalment of a monthly feature going through the 95 Departments of France in numerical (and mostly alpha)order to check out things of interest. I hope you enjoy it

Location – This is one of the original 83 departments created during the French Revolution.  It is in the South East.  It is sparsely populated.

Prefecture – Gap – the highest Prefecture in France





Signature foods – Potato or spinach fritters, Sweet fritters with prunes, tomme (cheese)

Places to visit – Queyras Valley, Serre Chevalier (skiing), Briancon, Lake Serre-Poncon (large artificial lake)
