Départements de France: Alpes-de-Haute-Provence

 



 

This is the 4th instalment of my monthly feature going through the 95 Departments of France in alphabetical order to check out things of interest. I hope you enjoy it

 

Location – This department is one of the least densely populated in France.  The biggest town has just over 20k population.  It is in the hinterland of Provence and has a border with Italy. 32% of the homes in the department are second homes.

Prefecture – Digne-les-Bains

 

 

Signature foods – Truffles, Black pudding, Lavender honey

 

Places to visit – Manosque (birthplace of writer Jean Giono), Sisteron (ancient citadel), Gorge of Verdon (Europe's grand canyon), Digne-les-Bains (spa town), lavender fields, Forcalquier (cathedral)

 

 

Famous people – Alphonse Eugene Beau de Rochas (Engineer – came up with the 4 stroke internal combustion engine), Jean Giono, Carole Merle (skier), Laura Duterte (figure skater)
