Woman in History – Dame Cath Tizard

Dame Cath (I knew her years ago so I know the informality will be just fine) was the first female Mayor of Auckland in 1983 and then the first female Governor-General of New Zealand in 1990.

A remarkable achievement given that she was a divorced female.  But Cath is, and was, a feisty no nonsense cheerful woman.  She doesn't put on airs and graces. She likes a laugh and a gin.  A thoroughly decent woman.

She also managed to have 4 children, one of whom became an MP as well as completing a degree in zoology.
