So what is Picadillo and where does it come from. I found it online when looking for something
new to do with beef mince (ground beef).
It is a traditional Cuban dish.
It sounds a bit like peccadillo.
But it is just the word for mince and not a misdemeanour.
Ingredients
(sorry
there are quite a lot)
Olive oil/garlic oil
1 cup chopped onion ( ½ brown, ½ red)
1 tblsp tomato paste
1 diced capsicum (I didn't have any)
2 tsp cumin
2 tsp oregano
Salt & Pepper
2 bay leaves
½ cup white wine
1 ½ lb beef mince
1 cup canned diced tomatoes
2 tblsp Worcestershire sauce
1/3 cup sultanas (or raisins)
½ cup olives & 2tblsp brine
2 tblsp capers
1 large waxy potato cut into ¼ inch cubes
Method:
Heat your oil until it is really hot.
Add your onion and cook for 5 to 7 minutes
Add tomato paste, cumin, oregano, salt (1 ½ tsp),
pepper (1tsp) and the bay leaves.
Cook for another 2 minutes
Add the wine and cook for 5 minutes
Add the meat and cook (stirring) for 5-7 minutes
Add all the other ingredients.
Cover the pan, reduce the heat and cook untl the
potatoes are tender.
Serve with rice (despite the potato!)
Sounds amazing! My next door neighbor is Cuban and all of her dishes are spiced really well.. Stay safe
ReplyDeleteIt's a lot of ingredients but I have most of them in the cupboard. I don't have olives but I am okay with omitting them!
ReplyDeletePIcadillo is popular throughout the Caribbean, Mexico, South America, and the Philippines, as well as Cuba, with regional variations, of course. It's great in empanadas. I've heard that ground beef is currently scarce in many US markets, so I guess it might be another dish we can't make during the lockdown.
ReplyDeletebe well... mae at maefood.blogspot.com
My sister-in-law is Cuban and her recipe is great, just like yours. I haven’t made it in a while. Looks great!
ReplyDeleteI always think this dish sounds delicious, but I've never tried making it. Now that my cooking time has expanded so much, maybe I will!
ReplyDeleteI love a good picadillo -- I think I have everything in the house for this. Yummmm
