Carrie's War by Nina Bawden

Carrie's War is No 10 on the UKBookTrust's list of best books for 9 to 11 year olds.

After an unusual beginning, this book turned out to be a tale about some children evacuated to Wales during the Second World War.

The tale showed the assessment of adults made by the children (which should give us all pause).

The children went back to their mother and on their way saw a house on fire.  Carrie thought it was her fault.  You'll have to read the book to see why.

Because of the historical setting of the book it has not dated since its publication in the 1970's.

As an aside, one of the adult characters in the book is called Hepzibah.  I found the name a little surprising so did a bit of research. As many of you will know, she was a Queen in the bible – married to the King of Judah. (2 Kings 21:1) – the name is supposed to mean 'my delight is in her'

  1. I've seen that name come up in very "religious" families but it is a very old name.
