A wonderful illustration by a German called Ernst
Haeckel – done in 1899
This is a poem by John Vance Cheney (an American poet) about
the Hummingbird:
Voyager
on golden air,
Type of all that's fleet and fair,
Incarnate gem,
Live diadem
Bird-beam of the summer day, —
Whither on your sunny way?
Type of all that's fleet and fair,
Incarnate gem,
Live diadem
Bird-beam of the summer day, —
Whither on your sunny way?
My word, that is an amazing illustration! I am familiar with Haeckel but I do not recall having ever seen this work. In the nineteenth century the obsessive fascination with hummingbirds almost caused the extinction of some species.
ReplyDeleteI have Haeckel's 'Art Forms in Nature' book that I've used several times for inspiration as well as using some of his pics for embroidery designs!
